The Point is the US was dominating western Politics more and more, so the west wasnt fading, just slowly changing from a more Equally led Group to more Centered on the United States.

Well more like Changing Dramatically. the European Empires were no longer fighting for dominance or Expansionism and more on Self Preservation, Thus Countries like France and Portugal fought costly to retain their Territory. Although most of these Wars were won by the Europeans, they had to let go for various Political reasons. Algerian war was won by the French army, but they still had to let go because of Pressure from the United States and the Threat of Communist Involvement. In the Suez Crisis, The French, british, and israeli's beat the Egyptians heavily but the United States's President eisenhower refused to let their allies fight to preserve their empires, as he wanted a world similar to ours, but with more american dominance. Although Britain and France remain as some of the best military powers on earth, they are not what they used to be when it comes to numbers.
