Hey everybody - just a quick note to thank our followers / subscribers for hanging around. We've put our podcast on hiatus while we deal with some irl stuff but still here plugging away testing, playing and running various Linux distros.

Best Linux Distros According to @Mostly_Linux

There are hundreds of Linux distributions available. Which one to use in the face of so much choice? This wealth of options can be intimidating to the aspiring Linux user used to having Microsoft deciding on everything about their operating system in a top-down manner. Linux is bottom-up - meaning that thousands of individual coders work with millions of individual users to adapt, maintain and deploy different versions of Linux for different groups of users.

This can be overwhelming so we're here to help. These are the top three Linux distributions. Our selections are appropriate for all users whether you're new, intermediate or advanced. Here we go.

1. Arch Linux (using either Antergos or Manjaro)
Arch-based distributions provide for the greatest degrees of freedom and flexibility to the user. To us, this is the way that Linux is meant to be. It provides the greatest number of applications and the best system for updating your system. It also provides access to the Arch User Repository (AUR) that provides access to pretty well every app developed for any version of Linux. It's also great for gaming. Go with one of these depending on your level of skill and knowledge:

For beginners to intermediate users - start with Manjaro Linux (https://manjaro.org/). Manjaro provides a little more hand-holding than other versions of Arch Linux and has easy setup and maintenance.

For intermediate or advanced users - go with Antergos (https://antergos.com/). This is the version that I use. It provides all of the benefits of Arch and more flexibility than Manjaro.

2. Ubuntu Budgie (https://ubuntubudgie.org/)
Ubuntu is the de facto standard for Linux distributions and Budgie is the best desktop environment for Ubuntu. If you want the greatest support and compatibility in a system that is unlikley to break down - go with the standard that is Ubuntu.

3. Solus Budgie (https://solus-project.com/)
In pretty well most meaningful ways, Solus Budgie is superior to Ubuntu Budgie. It's stable and unlike Ubuntu, it's a rolling release meaning that you will get Kernel updates sooner than under the fixed release schedule provided by Canonical (Ubuntu). We're placing it in third here because it appears to us that the development schedule for Solus has slowed down and we're a little wary of recommending it until we see some definitive updates to the core system and to the desktop environment.

Any one of these will serve you well for general use and for gaming. Each one is well supported and stable. Each one can also be launched via a live USB so that you can test it out before commiting to an install. Each one can also install beside Windows so that you can boot back into it for that must-play game that doesn't have a Linux equivalent.
