The expansion is quite teh same, you won't find any difference actually as a new player, so no worries there.

I'm new to the game and I find singleplayer campaing extremely slow, boring and sometimes even unfair. Is there still anyone playing the basic version in multiplayer? (I do own the expansion, but I rather not play it until I'm done with the normal version.)

When the MP fixes currently in beta go live for real, then I am going to give ES MP one more chance. Anyone else thinking that way?

The fix is in beta (so if you bought, you can just sign up for beta...)

if you are going to play multiplayer, its not worth buying until they have corrected the synch and bug issues. Sinlge player it should work just fine.
