Hitman 2: Silent Assassin feels like the moment the Hitman series truly became what people know it as today. While Hitman: Codename 47 had the foundation, it still leaned heavily into action at times. Silent Assassin slowed things down and focused much more on stealth, disguises, patience, and planning your approach carefully.
For the first time, Agent 47 actually feels like a cold, professional assassin instead of just an action hero with a barcode.

Gameplay
What makes the game memorable is the freedom it gives the player. Most missions let you decide how careful or aggressive you want to be. You can sneak through areas unnoticed, steal disguises, set up clean sniper shots, or slowly learn guard patterns until everything goes perfectly.
The game is at its best when you take your time. There is a real tension to moving through hostile areas while trying not to attract attention, especially because the game does not always make things easy for you.
At the same time, the game definitely shows its age. Guards can become suspicious very quickly, disguises sometimes feel unreliable, and a few missions near the end lean too much into direct combat instead of stealth.

Story and Atmosphere
The darker tone is one of the game’s strongest qualities. Agent 47 trying to escape his violent past gives the story more personality than most stealth games from that era.
The soundtrack by Jesper Kyd is also unforgettable and adds a lot to the atmosphere. Combined with the different locations and quiet tension throughout the missions, the game has a style that still stands out today.

Final Verdict
Even with its flaws, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin remains one of the most important stealth games ever made. It established the identity of the Hitman series and laid the groundwork for almost every game that came after it.
Some missions can be frustrating, and the final levels do drift a bit too far into action, but the atmosphere, music, and slow methodical gameplay still make it a classic.
