Just....Don't do it. The systems and world are cool and its easy to get very good at combat, but the main quests are just awful. So much "flip random lever here behind hidden wall" to progress halfway across the map with no indication thats what you need to do. I asked myself so many times "how in the world was I supposed to know to do that without guide??" Its like the game was purposefully designed to get you to buy the accompanying paperback guide.

Its cool to see the history and progression of what is essentially proto-starfield, but just watch a video on it instead the gameplay is just not good. 4/10

If you want play a worthwhile old elderscrolls game, start with morrowind.

A game about fighting against the controls as your AI decides to be insufferable as possible.

I can already tell this is significantly better than pillars of eternity 1 in every way and I don't feel I gained much by starting with 1.

This is a pretty hard one to recommend just due to the fact that the beginning and pretty much all of act 1 is painfully boring. There's somehow an insane amount of text to read, but also little to no relevant information actually given to flesh out the story. There's also not very much in terms of emotional stakes or hooks to invest you as the player to the story and world. At times it feels less like a story and more like reading a textbook about a reality that doesn't actually exist. Its very... spectrum coded.

That said the combat was a lot of fun to me and the builds are deep and things actually start happening 1/3rd of the way through the game. 6/10 buy on sale only if you've already liked other similar CRPGs otherwise I would say just skip to Deadfire and maybe come back if you really liked it.

Its got a lot of potential, but its just not something I can recommend to 99% of people. It literally explains nothing and it seems to be designed as if it actively hates the player and wants them to suffer as much as possible. Being hard is fine, not explaining things is fine, not doing any hand-holding is fine, but that needs to be coupled with good balance, intuitive game design, and sources of in-world information to learn from or else it just becomes an incredibly frustrating and tedious slog. Its a shame too because the art direction is absolutely gorgeous and the world is massive, and the price is reasonable. Whether or not you like it REALLY depends on how much experience you have with CRPGs.

The remaster is worth it for the character animations during dialog alone, but the game does look much prettier more generally. The OG version really entered the uncanny valley for me. Characters looked like real life animatronic robots. Unfortunately besides having truly exceptional graphics, the rest of the game is basically an ubisoft open world slopfest with spongey enemies. If you like that style of game, you'll love this. If you don't, it probably won't change your mind. 6/10

I never played this when it came out, but I like larian and don't love turned based stuff much so I thought I'd check it out. Really good game with a similar size and scope to oblivion with a big world and a huge amount of side quests but with nice style similar to fable. The graphics hold up really well, although you have to install the patch (in the guides) or cap it to 60fps in the menu. Its pretty goofy and not too serious with a lot of humor and jokes that are subtle enough to not be cringe. It starts off kinda slow and character builds actually tend to matter. There's also no level scaling so you have to explore and level up questing or else you will get stomped trying to just b-line through the main quests. It has some jank but most games of this scope tend to and it wasn't that bad. I really do wonder why this is not as well known as something like oblivion, dragon age, fable, dragons dogma, witcher 2 or that era of RPGs. Must have not had a good marketing budget or something. 8/10 recommend full price.

I just finished Divine Divinity for the first time ever and I absolutely loved it. They took the big open world and interesting quests and side quests of a CRPG like baldur's gate, and then combined it with the combat and progression of a Diablo game. It is honestly so unique and good even to this day. For Beyond divinity, they took the crappy CRPG party based real time with pause combat, and put it into a linear dungeon clawer like diablo. They went from combining the best aspects of the two genres to combing the two worst aspects of the two genres. Its just...not good.
