Hail to Old KU

Another football season is about to come to an end, yet it doesn't seem we will approach the basketball season with quite the same confidence that we have been used to. After enduring what appears to be a 1-win season (no matter how promising it may be), Jayhawk fans are anxious for success on the hardwood.

But this group of Kansas cagers is inexperienced and Coach Bill Self isn't seeing, yet, the kind of product he knows is capable out of this group. An early loss to Michigan State while allowing a second half comeback and a disappointing performance against Chatanooga (and preseason) have proven that.

But Coach Self is nothing if not a motivator. He pushed and prodded one of his least talented teams last year all the way to the National Championship game and, while never within a possession of the lead late in the game, came within a couple of lucky and athletic and remarkable Kentucky saves from standing up the hair on Coach Calipari's neck with memories of the last championship that slipped through his grasp in 2008.

Time and patience. The parts are all new and while a brand new Ferrari looks good and can win doing it (UK proved it last year), that's not Self's style. He savors taking out the rust of a true project and polishing it to titles and championships. The palyers certainly aren't rusty, but their collective game is.

For a team like that, there's no better coach to have than Self.
