Back after a decade with something new.

Perihelion: Rogue Orbit

G'day folks, it's blaknite from The LANBox.

After a long time away, I'm releasing a game under The LANBox name.

Perihelion: Rogue Orbit is a 2D space combat roguelite. You fit a ship, shoot at other ships, and your fit and piloting are all that stand between you and the dark, cold abyss.

There are a number of ways to fit your ship: burst cannons, railguns, missiles, passive and active tanks, speed tanks, the lot.

Once your ship's fit, you launch into combat. Face sectors of increasing difficulty and varying objectives. Destroy hostiles, take out priority targets, and scan anomalies under fire.

It's top-down space combat where positioning is everything. Keep up that transversal or you'll quickly come to regret it.

Perihelion: Rogue Orbit is coming to Steam Early Access soon, with limited playtesting already underway.

The LANBox

The LANBox started in 2007 as a gaming community built around a Garry's Mod server in Adelaide.

It grew into forums, game servers, news, reviews, tutorials, screenshots, arguments, in-jokes, late nights, and a surprising number of people who stuck around.

Over the years we ran servers for Garry's Mod, Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2, Minecraft, and Terraria.

The forum closed in 2017.

That was the end of The LANBox as a community platform, but I kept the name around. Kept the Steam group. Kept in touch with a bunch of people from those days.

Now I'm using it for something new.

What happens now

This is not a forum revival.

The LANBox is now the banner I'm releasing games under.

Perihelion: Rogue Orbit is the first one.

How movement changes every fight - Perihelion: Rogue Orbit

Hey folks, blaknite here again! This time to tell you all about combat in my upcoming game Perihelion: Rogue Orbit.

Perihelion: Rogue Orbit is a game about fitting a ship, flying it badly, realising the problem was you, and then flying it better. That loop only works if the flying matters.

That's why Perihelion has what's called transversal.

Transversal is the sideways motion between you and a target. If an enemy burns straight toward you, it can be moving fast and still be easy to hit. Your guns barely need to turn. If that same enemy cuts across your line of fire, especially up close, your guns have to swing hard to keep up.

I first learned this the hard way in EVE Online. I slapped the biggest artillery I could find on a Cyclone, undocked, found some belt rats, and watched my mighty guns produce sad little scratches.

Nothing was broken. I just had no idea what was happening.

Under the hood, the game draws an invisible line from the shooter to the target. Then it splits the target’s movement into two parts: motion along that line, and motion across it. The sideways part becomes transversal, which is compared against the weapon’s tracking. If the weapon can keep up, damage applies cleanly. If it can’t, damage falls off fast.

My favourite moment in Perihelion is changing tack at just the right time, nulling transversal, and watching an enemy go POP. It feels clever, a little smug perhaps. Definitely good.

So how do you know you'll land that shot?

When you have a fire target, the HUD shows fire-solution bars near your ship in the direction of that target. Good application makes the bars tighter, brighter, and stronger. Bad application makes them spread out and weaken.
