Stars shine due to nuclear fusion in their cores, where hydrogen fuses under the tremendous pressure to form helium, releasing vast amounts of energy. In more massive stars, the CNO cycle facilitates this fusion using carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as catalysts. Hydrostatic equilibrium keeps a balance between the outward pressure from fusion and inward gravitational force, keeping the star stable. Energy generated in the core travels outward through radiative diffusion and convection, eventually radiating as light from the star's surface. It takes light about 200,000 years to travel out of the dense core into space.
